Things You Should Do When Your Blog Post Goes Viral

Viral is in the eye of the beholder, at least in the blogging world. Some say it's a million, but that is definitely not my definition. In my opinion, viral is just a whole lot more than the views/shares that I normally get. So now that you have all of these new visitors coming to your site, there are a few things you might want to check on and spruce up not only in that one post itself, but on your entire blog.

Grammar and Spelling

Grammar and spelling mistakes happen, they certainly happen to me. BUT when you have a ton of them, your blog might lose some of it's street cred (can a blog have street cred? Well, they do now). You want your new found readership to take you seriously as an authority on your craft.

So onward and upward, triple check that grammar and spelling. Start out with the viral post and move on to other posts as you see fit. This also pertains to the formatting, graphics and all of that good stuff.

HEY! HEY! Look at ME!

Don't let readers come to your blog post and leave. Link to some other relevant blog posts right in that blog post. It not only gives your readers added value, but it will show them what else you have to offer and keep them coming back for more. For instance, I'll just leave this post about a simple change to my blog graphics that increased my blog traffic HERE.

Another great way to show readers what else you have to offer is to use a related posts plugin like Shareaholic or YARPP.

If you've been on the fence about offering an opt-in or incentive with signup to your newsletter, now is the time to strike! Like I said before, the more value you can offer your readers the better.

Something about your post attracted a lot of readers. What did you do differently this time? Did you share it more? What social media outlets did you use? Did your graphic really pop or stand out? What was the topic? Take note of these things for your future posts so you can give your audience more of what they are looking for.

Another great way to see what your audience wants is Google Analytics. If you already have it installed, now is a great time to really start checking out all of it's "reader stalking" features. You can see where your viewers came to your site from, how long they stayed, at what page they were on when they left, what time they visited and so much more.

If you don't already have Google Analytics, I recommend installing it ASAP and reading above!

If you have ads on your blog, now is a good time to reassess. Make sure they aren't completely overwhelming or slowing your blog down.

Also, make sure that you are following the ad networks rules. When I first started out, I was using Google Adsense and did not realize that I should have had their privacy policy on my site (PLEASE don't ban me Google! I have learned the error of my ways and I am sorry!). After I added their privacy policy to the bottom of my site, my earning increased exponentially.

It's All About YOU

I have noticed that when I had a blog post get a bit of attention, my "About Me" page got increased attention as well. So make sure your page is saying what you want it to about you, your brand and your blog. If you use social media, now is a good time to make sure that you have easy to find social media links available as well as a link to subscribe to the rest of your awesome blog.

Are there any other things you do do when you have a blog post that is getting lots of attention? I would love to hear your experiences!
